Connecting with the world, expressing ideas through art, growing as readers and exploring STEM.
At Bunker Hill Elementary (BHE), four educator-led projects are opening new possibilities for student learning.
Congratulations to BCE’s recipients of the 2026 J. Landon Short Mini Grants for Educators:
Grant recipient(s) | Project |
|---|---|
Emily Templin, with Natalie McCue | Postcrossing With the World |
Christopher McVay, with Kimberley Lamb | Chalk Walk |
Lauren Nye, with Carson Wisenbakers | Unlocking the Secrets to Reading |
Philip Porter | Chomp for STEM! |
Postcrossing With the World, led by Templin and McCue, brings a global perspective to classroom learning. The project connects students’ curiosity about the world with opportunities to communicate and learn about people and places beyond their own community.
Through Chalk Walk, McVay and Lamb put creativity in the spotlight. The project celebrates art as a way for students to share ideas and contribute to their school community.
Nye and Wisenbakers’ Unlocking the Secrets to Reading focuses on a skill that opens doors across every subject. Supporting students’ growth as readers helps build confidence and independence as they discover, understand and learn.
Porter’s Chomp for STEM! brings a spirit of exploration to science, technology, engineering and math, encouraging the curiosity and problem-solving that help students make sense of the world around them.
Together, these projects reflect the many ways educators create opportunities for students to connect, imagine and grow.

Made possible through generous community support, the J. Landon Short Mini Grants for Educators help turn creative ideas into meaningful classroom experiences. It’s #CollectiveGreatness in action.
You can help make great things happen for kids, too. Visit SBISD’s Engage page to learn how to support students, classrooms and schools.
